Well, it’s obvious after reading the May 30 letter, “Vision for future a scary prospect,” that exaggeration and motive assassination are winning the day on the left side of the aisle. Let’s clear the air: Government can, of course, be trusted in the areas where it was designed to function, running private business not being one of those. Monitoring citizens’ spiritual activities would be another particularly odious example of excess. So many recent encroachments on the liberties put in place by the creators of our Constitution could be cited but space does not permit.
The writer mentioned torture. Certain techniques may or may not be acceptable and should be examined. At the time the interrogation techniques were employed, however, it obviously didn’t seem extreme against the backdrop of thousands of citizens either jumping to their deaths or perishing in fires as the whole country looked on in horror. Finally, perish the thought, but a free market system with limited government interference actually does work. The cream really does rise to the top and when it does everybody eats better.
