On April 25. Bonnie Haugen wrote that Mill Creek should build its own schools (“District boundaries: Can’t Mill Creek afford schools?”). She’s missing the major idea in tax-supported financing – spread the wealth. Sure Mill Creek could build its own schools – its extremely valuable real estate and fewer children per household would support an elite school system.
The Everett School District would be a big loser – tax revenue would be reduced considerably, so the cost to individual property owners would rise. Everett School District residents who don’t live in Mill Creek better hope that no one from Mill Creek gets the idea of creating their own school district. If they did, property taxes in the remaining Everett School District would have to rise to compensate for the loss of Mill Creek property taxes. Shhhhh!
