I read the Aug. 1 article, “The torture begins” about the closure of Highway 529 northbound and just laughed, even though I shouldn’t because it will directly affect my commute. The Department of Transportation said, “Just find another way out of Everett,” and basically, “Don’t worry, there will be signs telling you where to go.”
That’s the problem – there are limited ways out of Everett. The last time northbound 529 was closed out of Everett, it took me two hours just to get to the freeway onramp at Everett Avenue, from Colby Avenue. Every side street in this town was jam packed full of cars.
The other closure I have lived through was southbound, and the traffic was so bad it was backed up going into Everett all the way from Smokey Point in the morning. The State Patrol had to be called in to direct traffic coming into town on Everett Avenue. So they say this closure could last up to 40 days? Have they forgotten about the last time they did this? I personally think they should call out the National Guard – it will be very ugly.
