Biden did right thing in deal for release of Griner

A recent letter writer’s charge against President Biden was disappointing. Contributors should check the facts before going public. The writer thought Russian prisoner Paul Whelan was more deserving of a get-out-of-jail card than Brittney Griner because he had been a Marine. Yes, he enlisted in the Corps, but was kicked out with a a bad conduct discharge.

His charge against Biden reflected a media position that rejects all things Biden. Griner’s and Whelan’s records are open, so a quick read would have kept him from airing his misconception before the public. The writer has reason to be angry but not with Biden. He and I should be joined in war with propaganda engines that spew misinformation.

The radical interests that fuel most anti-Biden reactions represent the far-right arm of the once respectable Republican Party that votes for, defends, colludes with, and otherwise supports law-breakers. It hurts me when ill-informed partisan pundits encourage their mischief. It hurts the party I once supported.

Whelan went to Russia as a professional security agent for hire. Griner went to play basketball. Which posed the greater threat to Russia’s authoritarian regime? While I wish Mr. Whelan a speedy release, President Biden brought the better person home first. I agree that by doing so, he might have earned some votes if he runs again. What’s the matter with that? Have we fallen to criticizing leaders when they do the right thing?
