Biden was able to chose firsts among best choices for Cabinet

In his Feb. 8 letter to the editor, Bruce Ferguson insinuates that President Biden’s Cabinet and Vice President are not “more qualified,” but rather chosen as “firsts” in order to reflect the diversity of our country.

Does the fact that they are “firsts” automatically mean they are not the best available? I’m wondering if “more qualified” is the right’s code word for white male? I don’t recall seeing a letter to the editor four years ago from Mr. Ferguson criticizing the Republicans for nominating a failed businessman/reality TV host for president.
