The editorial from the Columbia Basin Herald in the Jan. 11 Herald (“Congress needs to legislate, not go after Trump”) warns us against impeachment. Until recently I felt we might be able to wait until 2020. Now, with the government shutdown I have changed my mind.
Mr Trump has decided there is an emergency. Why wasn’t there an emergency when the Republicans controlled all three branches of government? There is no new emergency, yet now more than a million people have no paychecks.
This wall will never be built. There is too much private land whose owners won’t give it up. The cost is astronomical. Estimates are up to $50 billion. The building would take years. The steel now under consideration can easily be sawed through. Tunnels and other means of breaching barriers are already in place.
The lawful asylum seekers are now being detained in camps. Children are still separated from parents. And the numbers of terrorists and criminals has been greatly exaggerated. Drugs are not shipped through holes in the border but are hidden in trucks.
This crisis has been manufactured just to divert the attention of the public from the investigation into the administration. The president is becoming more erratic. Something needs to be done to protect the country from our biggest risk: Mr Trump himself.
