I enjoyed reading the memories of Sen. Jackson that have appeared in The Herald. I’d like to share mine.
My husband and I were having lunch at Rosario Resort on Orcas Island in the mid-1970s. On that particular day the Orcas Island Republican Women’s Association was having their annual luncheon in the dining room.
As the double doors at the back of the restaurant opened we could see a giant ice sculpture of a GOP elephant being wheeled down the main aisle. The busboy had disappeared and in his place pushing the ice elephant was Sen. Jackson. When the Republican women realized who was delivering their dessert, they gave him a standing ovation. This was followed by handshakes, hugs and kisses all around.
I guess it was a different time. It’s hard to imagine something like that taking place in today’s political climate.
