In answer to the Sunday letter that voter rejection of the candy tax means we care more about candy than kids, the writer is just flat wrong. His blame is misplaced and misguided.
The Legislature is firmly in control of all spending in the state and they are the ones who do not value schools and our kids’ education. When faced with budget difficulties, one has to prioritize what is “most important.” Do I buy food or pay the cable bill? Washington’s Constitution charges the state with certain responsibilities very clearly and education is actually spelled out as a “paramount duty of the state.”
So if the Legislature chooses other priorities ahead of its “paramount duty,” do not blame voters who were asked to make a decision on a certain tax or fee. Blame the Legislature, which is more concerned about “other things” than the next generation. As they say, “Put your money where your mouth is.”
