The recent surprise announcement about plans to build a new Boeing Co. pier on the Mukilteo waterfront should be a wake-up call for Mukilteo residents. It appears the Port of Everett, the City of Everett, Boeing and officials from the governor’s office in Olympia have already discussed and made preliminary plans to industrialize the Mukilteo waterfront. It would further appear that our own mayor and city council are either not in the loop or have simply chosen not to report this significant plan change to Mukilteo’s citizens.
The proposed Boeing pier would allow oversized rail containers to be moved to their facility without having to be transferred from their current unloading facility on the Everett waterfront. The “Mukilteo Landing” plan has never indicated industrial facilities in the design plan. It has included plans for a new double slip ferry dock, a small train station, a huge parking lot for commuter vehicles, some limited public access amenities, a small park and a possible marina.
Mukilteo is the big loser in the proposed development of these 21 acres of prime waterfront land, and our elected representatives should be held accountable for their lack of foresight and lack of communication. If Boeing is allowed to build an industrial pier in Mukilteo, then the ferry dock should be relocated to the Everett waterfront. This would allow ferry commuters closer access to the new regional transportation center in Everett, and to I-5 and U.S. 2. Mukilteo and the Port of Everett could then engage in an open public process to explore more suitable uses for this irreplaceable waterfront land that would be of much greater benefit to our community.
