Concerning the inane June 11 editorial about BP, “An image beyond repair”:
George Orwell’s “1984” is a prophetic novel about what happens when a centralized, oppressive government legislates and regulates individualism out of the people to the point where they become dehumanized automatons of the state. To make sure the masses understood the futility of resistance, posters of an enormous, black-mucstachioed face gazed down from everywhere.
“It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. Big Brother is watching you, the caption beneath it ran.”
To try to link, in any way, a private corporation like BP to the intended warning of “1984” is beyond misleading. There are no private corporations in “Oceania.” (Big Brother would not approve.) Everything is controlled by “the party.”
