This past weekend, my wife and I shopped at a co-op in Edmonds It has the bulk food bins (granola, candy, spices, etc.) like a lot of other stores. While my wife was getting her items, I’m watching folks filling their bags with all sorts of products in that section and putting handfuls of the these products in their mouth as they’re doing so. These are mostly people and couples in their 50s and 60s. So I look for a sign that says “While shopping in our bulk food area, feel free to stuff your piehole with as much of our product as possible to ensure your complete customer satisfaction.” Nope, no sign and no invitation to “sample” the product.
The way I was raised, taking or consuming items that you have not paid for is theft … stealing. Then there is the obvious hygiene-related problem of handling foodstuffs that are otherwise unprotected. Call me old fashioned, but what’s right is right, and what’s wrong is wrong. And all the time I was watching these folks they just smiled at me and walked along their merry way seemingly fine with stealing products — pathetic, unsanitary and illegal unless we’ve changed the definition of theft.
