In Kristi O’Harran’s Oct. 22 column she quotes some of the things students wrote about what qualities make a good president and the responsibilities of being a citizen. I was inspired by their statements and realized that, even for us grown-ups, we are responsible to understand our own values and what qualities we look for in a president.
I believe that responsibility begins at home and I think that President Bush has not attended to the basic things which will keep us strong at home. He seems almost to have ignored the fact that you can’t give away money when you don’t have it. By increasing our national budget and reducing taxes he has turned a $125 billion federal budget surplus into a $413 billion deficit. He has lost us more than 1 million jobs in the United States. He has the worst record on domestic jobs of any president since the Depression.
I am an at-home mom who believes that our first responsibilities are at home.
