I am 32, married, a parent and employed in a job I enjoy. I am not a politically active person at this stage of my life, but I know I am part of a voting bloc that both parties need to court for success in their campaigns. I listen to statistics, and I know that there are thousands of others out there who believe as I do in a woman’s right to choose. I also know that we’ve had a bad habit of being silent.
I want this simple message to reach others who believe in choice – please listen and understand how threatening George W. Bush will be to this issue if he is elected president! Bush is constantly reminding his conservative supporters to look at his record as governor. His choice of Cheney rather than a more moderate Republican (think Christine Whitman) speaks volumes.
Our next president will appoint as many as three Supreme Court justices and this will give him almost insurmountable power to limit, restrict and even completely ban reproductive rights for women and men. Bush has downplayed his own stance on this issue in the flashy campaign ads we see and unfortunately the media hasn’t found it important enough to speak plainly about it either. This lulls the pro-choice majority into thinking all is fine. In fact, we need to end our silent assumptions that choice will remain a choice over the next four years.
If a woman’s right to choose matters to you, please think critically about the impact our next president will have.
