A phone call from a representative of United Way stated that the Boy Scouts of America will not receive a grant from the donations collected from the citizens of Snohomish County, many of whom have boys in the Boy Scouts. The only money the Scouts receive is money that the people request go to the Boy Scouts when they make a donation. The Boy Scouts of America provide leadership, guidance, good sportsmanship, and character-building for young boys.
For those of you who do not understand scouting, this is what scouting is all about:
The Scout Oath: “On my honor I will do my best – to do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the Scout Law, to help other people at all times, to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.”
The 12 Scout Laws. “A Scout is: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.”
My brothers and I joined the Boy Scouts when we were 12, as did most all boys in our school class. It was our way of life, with scout meetings, outings and earning the badges from Tenderfoot to Eagle Scout. Most of my brother scouts served their country during World War II and some lost their lives serving their country doing their duty. To my knowledge, not one ever spent a day in jail.
Those who believe that scouting is the guidance young boys need in today’s world to be physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight should send their donations directly to their local Boy Scouts of America council.
