And so, via radio call-in shows, newspaper online comment sites, TV opinion panels —round and round we go, attempting to pinpoint the causes of the Florida massacre.
The camps have dug in and the likelihood of changing minds seems remote. I include myself here as I’m sure I won’t be favoring civilian ownership of assault rifles any time soon (and don’t need to hear from anyone that an AR-15 is not an assault/automatic/semi-automatic/whatever-style weapon). Unless you live in the Alaskan outback and most of your neighbors are grizzly bears, these powerful guns are just not necessary.
Suggestion for the media: Stop hiding the carnage. Print the photos and run the videos. We’ll probably all end up with PTSD but maybe that’s what it’ll take to move the needle on this scandal. Meanwhile, Emma Gonzalez (her speech was terrific!) and her fellow students are turning their horrifying experience into righteous activism. Very humbling.
