After reading the opinion of the student at Cascade High School about how joining the military would afford her college money, I couldn’t help but cringe. That poor kid will now have every recruiter in Washington calling on her.
Will someone please explain to her that the nearly 2,000 soldiers killed in Iraq won’t be coming home and attending college? Does she really want to potentially join that number?
What if she ends up crippled from George Bush’s war? How easy will it be to get through college then? Especially since veteran benefits keep getting cut.
War isn’t like hanging out in the hot desert for two years and then just going home to fulfill your dreams. This is life and death every day for the soldiers in Iraq. Also, there is post traumatic stress disorder that afflicts many soldiers returning, likely making college for them the last thing on their minds.
The student’s time would be better spent learning how to avoid such conflicts in the future and speaking out against a president who lied to this country about his reasons for going to war.
