Paine Field was built in 1936. The Herald states that 110,000 people are living within three miles of the airport. I am sure most of those people moved into that three-mile radius after the airport was built.
The Herald also stated that the expected noise level would average 55 decibels over a 24-hour period, or as noisy as a downtown Everett intersection. I don’t hear too many people complaining about a busy intersection.
This is like moving in next to the fire station, then complaining about the noise of the sirens.
I think our County Council is right in not offering county funds for improvements, but I feel commercial flights would be a great boost to our economy and our county tax funds. Especially since our council is expected to raise taxes in their next budget.
I hope the County Council does not draw a hard line in opposition until it looks at all aspects and is willing to negotiate in good faith. I also feel if the economic benefits were pointed out to the people and a vote was taken in the county, we would have commercial flights at Paine Field.
Whatcom County has a great airport in Bellingham and I for one would much rather fly from there when I can. How nice that would be for Snohomish County!
