When I read your Friday editorial essentially saying Sen. Patty Murray was correct in voting yes for John Roberts and Sen. Maria Cantwell was correct in voting no, I thought, there you have the Democratic Party motto for the last few years in a nutshell: Everybody’s right, nobody’s wrong; before you speak up, take a poll, don’t say anything really bad about this administration, you might lose Republican votes, don’t fight back when you’re falsely accused, everyone will somehow figure out the truth anyway, and when you face political pressure from the other side, tell your disgruntled constituents, “I’m voting my conscience.”
Well, wishy-washy Democrats in Congress better understand that those of us who care about Democracy enough to go door-belling on a rainy, windy election day to get out the votes for Murray and her ilk are fed up with their lack of courage and conviction. In spite of Murray’s fight for veterans, the environment and everything else I believe in, with this yes vote Murray has lost my allegiance. Why? Because not only will Roberts seek to destroy abortion rights, civil rights and champion the goal of a country run by a corporate dictatorship, he advised the Republicans on how to steal the election from Al Gore!
I don’t know what pressures or political maneuvering caused Murray to set aside her principles and the will of her constituency but your implication that both senators were right is absurd. Cantwell did the right thing in voting to reject a man who has no use for the will of the majority and plots to twist the law at the pleasure of his masters in the White House.
