One of Snohomish County’s top recreational treasures keeps gaining ground.
The Centennial Trail, which draws hundreds of thousands of people a year, continues to evolve from railway to trail way as envisioned by boosters more than two decades ago.
Money has been secured for a $4.1 million, 8-mile expansion from Arlington north to the Skagit County line. The state is kicking in a $1.75 million matching grant and Snohomish County will pay $2.4 million to build the trail’s third phase in 2007. What an excellent investment. The returns are vast, including an outstanding commitment to provide accessible outdoor recreation for future generations.
Additionally sweet is Snohomish’s plan to extend its Riverfront Trail, currently being improved and expanded, to meet the Centennial Trail in 2008.
Current generations are making the most of nearly 17.5 miles of trail.
In April, a 10.3-mile extension from Snohomish to almost Arlington was officially opened. With each growth spurt, the trail becomes even more popular. From hardcore bicyclists to those with training wheels, the trail is perfect for everyone. Walkers, wheelchair users, hikers, skaters and dogs walking their owners all have a place on this trail. Horseback riders have their own parallel trail.
What a way to revel in Snohomish County’s beauty. We’re definitely on the right path.
