The controversy over whether school students should be allowed to see Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” misses a great opportunity. This movie is an excellent example of the mixture of fact and opinion, something which many people, including adults, seem to have a poor grasp of. It is a great learning tool, involving a timely and important issue before us, for discerning the difference between fact and opinion. The movie contains facts, and in some cases opinions are stated in declarative terms as if they were facts. Learning how to tell the facts from non-facts is a crucial skill if people are ever going to be able to wade through the swamp of American politics, used car salesmen, the news media and letters to the editor.
