Despite what Costco, other mega-grocery chains and retail associations would have you believe, after the votes are in and the smoke and mirrors dissipate, if I-1183 wins, here is what you can expect: 1,000-plus currently employed workers will join the ranks of the already unemployed recession victims; exactly what our current state budget shortfall needs.
Large size (1.75L) liquor bottles will dominate shelf positions (more dollar volume, quicker and easier to restock — check the shelves in California). Small space retailers will sell liquor. Attorneys, the ACLU, your legislators, the Korean Grocers Association — a very vociferous and powerful group — and others will make sure of it if I-1183 passes.
Half-pint sizes will reappear (now banned by the Liquor Control Board to help control problem drinkers) — perfect for small mom & pop retailers with slim budgets and shelf space — and easy for teens to steal. Speaking of teens, if you’re tired of being pestered for “gas money” in your grocery store’s parking lot — get ready to see more of it and you can add derelicts to the mix.
The promised increase in enforcement officers? Each one will require: a uniform, a gun, a computer, a cell phone, a radio and a car — all paid for by you. Despite assurances to the contrary, expect state, county and city services to be curtailed even further. (Tried calling short-staffed offices lately?) A state income tax is a certainty! Vote no on I-1183!
