I am not a kid, but the Saturday letter, “Please bring back the old favorites,” hit the nail on the head.
Changes have been made in The Herald over the last few years and the majority of the changes have made the Herald a better paper. “The Buzz” is an example of a great change. It is done well and is one of the first things read outside of the headlines.
However, the current changes in the comic section seems to be change for change itself and have not been among the changes that help make The Herald a better paper. At one time, not too long ago, readers had a chance to vote on which cartoons appealed to them, but that seems to be a thing of the past. Now cartoons have changed with no input from readers, just changes from a person at The Herald.
Many cartoons that kids, as well as adults, have read with great interest seem to just disappear. “One Big Happy,” “Cleats” and “Soup To Nuts” are three cartoons that used to be the first read by adults and by adults for children. Now all three have disappeared from the daily comics. I am afraid that “Classic Peanuts” will be next. Getting The Herald every morning is not as much fun as it used to be.
I realize that “Cleats” and “Soup To Nuts” appear in the Sunday comics, but “One Big Happy” readers did not even get that as an afterthought. These three strips are written in a way that appeals to young and old. The replacements do not match up, including “Secret Asian Man.” I certainly feel that all three should be returned to the Herald comics seven days a week.
