Stay committed to a goal and it’s amazing what can happen.
Case in point: the Sultan High School girls soccer team, the state’s Class 2A champion.
Girls soccer has a rich tradition in Sultan, where the Turks have been on a steady climb to the top the past few years. They made the final four last year, got to the quarterfinals the year before that and came in second in 1997 and ‘98. Now, with a hard-fought shootout victory Saturday over defending state champion Naches Valley, they’re all alone at No. 1.
After a 3-2 semifinal victory over North Cascades League rival Meridian, Sultan’s defense rose to its greatest challenge against previously unbeaten Naches Valley. That defense kept the Rangers off the scoreboard, led by goalkeeper Molly Cramer’s sparkling saves. When a 0-0 tie sent the game into a pressure-packed shootout, the Turks calmly made all five of their shots to Naches Valley’s three to secure the title.
Meanwhile, the Cascade High girls capped their own memorable soccer season with an appearance in the Class 4A state title game. A 1-0 loss to Eastlake shouldn’t dampen the spirits of a team that got to the finals despite losing eight seniors from last season’s playoff team.
The Sultan and Cascade teams have earned the cheers of their fans. They’ll forever be points of pride for their schools.
