Bloomberg Opinion columnist Jonathan Bernstein makes a good case for why candidates that win make an effort to keep their campaign promises (“Student debt relief shows why campaign pledges matter,” The Herald, Aug. 29).
Which of course is a good reason to get candidates to make promises to do what matters. The expanded Child Tax Credit was a successful model of how to get help to families immediately. Now of course we need promises to renew it. The affordable housing crisis could benefit from this model, with a refundable renters tax credit. Further climate legislation, living wages, health care for all, and affordable child care are promises we need to hear and vote to have them acted on. So take time to ask candidates questions about these initiatives and vote accordingly.
