A recent letter to editor writer said homelessness is a result of bad choices, contrary to the opinion expressed by the Housing Hope CEO who believes that homelessness is caused by mental illness or by victims of bad luck. Obviously some homelessness is caused by mental illness, but it is often said that your luck is what you make it be.
I have no doubt that some homeless are victims of bad luck, but isn’t bad luck often, not always, a result of a bad choices? Isn’t using drugs a bad choice or is it just bad luck? Isn’t dropping out of school thereby limiting your choices of jobs a bad choice?
Help the homeless, but emphasize the need for schooling to kids who are not yet capable of making good choices or who don’t always have parents that are capable or even want to do the right thing with their kids. It might take a much bigger investment in schools and counseling to accomplish this but homelessness and the homeless costs are spiraling up every day.
