Mr. Jeff Siddiqui needs to open his eyes a little more before he complains about Islam being unfairly picked on. (Tuesday letter, “Freedom of speech only applied in certain cases.”) Christianity has been a favorite target of pop culture for decades. Academia, in particular, is harsh and confrontational toward anyone taking their faith seriously or actually believing that the Bible has a lot to say about how we should live our lives.
The arts have produced many works offensively mocking Christianity, all in the name of freedom of speech. The cross immersed in urine, funded with public money, comes to mind. Plays and movies portray strong Christians as either buffoons, idiots or murderers who kill people in the name of God, or because God told them to. Is it fair? No it isn’t, and it makes me angry when such things happen. However, Islam is not being singled out. So, Mr. Siddiqui, get in line and grow a thicker skin. Pop culture knows no boundaries.
