How prophetic! Prior to the Wednesday Everett City Council meeting I suggested it would be wise for Historic Everett and neighborhood association activists to be at City Hall Wednesday, if for no other reason than government must know they are being watched.
The Port of Everett has already learned this lesson. However, I had no idea of the planned agenda for the first meeting of 2010. Even more shocking, the real drama and skullduggery of the session was not on the agenda, but schemed in the shadows earlier by Councilman Ron Gipson and certain unnamed backers.
Well, boy howdy, didn’t we all receive a priceless lesson in civics! Within minutes of the Pledge of Allegiance all jaws dropped as Mr. Gipson orchestrated a reversal of city council meetings from evenings to mornings. With no prior warning, and with zero notice to the struggling taxpayers of Everett. A feeble attempt to table the motion took place, but it was insufficient, sadly.
The Herald’s Debra Smith wrote a fine article on Thursday about Wednesday’s sleazy action, and we shall see similar from The Tribune’s Lindsay Toler. Read them both and brace yourself. I say to all enthusiasts and champions of liberty and freedom: Prepare the ship for battle!
I strongly recommend that every Everett organization, citizen and taxpayer determined to see a better, smarter, more ethical Everett make plans to attend City Council meetings from now on. Historic Everett will be there, and we can count on neighborhood activists as well throughout 2010. Everett now owns a council dominated by backward-looking reactionaries, and if that really irks you as much as it does me, better be there or be sorry! Citizens: This is your council! Tell ’em how you feel! No telling what damn tomfoolery they will get up to next!
