Regarding the Aug. 19 article “Petition blasts Wal-Mart’s wages”: It amazes me that a petition can be written that appears to improve our standard of living but does nothing but increase the cost of living. Here we have a store that provides products to the public at a very low cost. The petitioners wish to raise the cost of the products by increasing the wages of the workers of this store. The workers at the store seem to approve of the wages they are receiving because they are still working there. The petitioners also would like the City of Arlington to exempt the store from this wage increase if the workers of this store have a union contract. I do not believe the City of Arlington or any government should or can dictate to the public and/or a business that it should be unionized. This petition has nothing to do with wages but is only a ploy to make this larger store become unionized. If the City of Arlington wishes to increase the average wage in Arlington then it should be across the board to include all stores. Gee, maybe this might put some small stores out of business.
