Coast Guard angels saved us from sinking

I am writing to you to let you know about an angel sent to us in the face of adversity.

We boarded our new boat, and after doing all of the safety checks we had learned, we launched from the Everett boat launch.

On our way past the jetty we smelled oil but dismissed it for just a new engine service. After we reached the end of the jetty, we opened the boat up and we started to take on water, then smoke, lots of smoke.

We tried to flag down a couple of boats for a tow, since the motor had quit. No one slowed down to even ask us we if needed help. We called the Coast Guard, they said help was on the way, and then we saw the angel, the Coast Guard cutter Spar coming right at us. They launched a small boat and had us off our boat and in safety in no time. Just in time to avoid sinking.

They got us to safety and welcomed us on board like we were part of the crew. Their hospitality and care was wonderful. They got us dry clothes and washed and dried our clothes. They cared about our health – physical and mental. They even cared about our dog Cookie, who became a friend to all on board. The captain and the crew were without a doubt the greatest presence of an angel we could have known.

We want to thank those men and women on the Spar, and the Snohomish Sheriff’s Department, for what can only be called a miracle. The fact that they “just happened to be in the Puget Sound for training,” and that “they just happened to be heading in to port early,” seems more than just a coincidence to us.

Their bravery and sacrifice, hospitality and care will never be forgotten by us or the family they saved.
