I read with deep sadness the Nov. 14 Herald article about the tragic death of David Sandoval and the impact his passing has left on his family and the community (“Young David Sandoval lived, and died, in the shadow of gangs”).
As he grieves, his father is searching for answers, wondering what he could have done to prevent this, how he could have helped his son and how he can now help his other two children. There are resources available for Mr. Sandoval, and any other parent who is struggling with what to say to their teen or how to help them navigate what are often tumultuous teenage years.
At Cocoon House, we offer services free of charge and confidentially (in English and Spanish), to parents who want to better understand their teens. These services are often sought out when conflict occurs but are available at any time. We also have staff who work throughout the county, reaching out to teens, offering them support, resources and a way out of trouble when necessary.
Cocoon House also partners with other nonprofits, offering support to at-risk and homeless teens, parents and the community. We, along with many other nonprofits, are a resource for any teen or parent who needs our assistance. Our hearts go out to the Sandoval family and we wish them peace as they grieve and process this senseless tragedy.
