Having just completed the third article in the saga of the Salty Sea Days Festival, it would seem to some that the flap over this event has ended, but to many it is only a slight diversion from the issues that still exist. It is my opinion that this event, as is, has outlasted the novelty and attraction as an event that can stand alone.
Since there seems to be a lack of coordination between groups regarding the celebration of the Fourth of July and Salty Sea Days – the major conflict being financing of both events in an equitable manner – it would make more sense to combine the two events making it possible for the city to live up to the title of “All-American City” and have a week-long celebration culminating in a grand parade honoring the city and the country.
To further enhance such an event, perhaps the committee could put forth an effort to have various ships and military units hold their reunions here during this time, thus enabling the hotel-motel tax to actually bring in overnight and week-long guests, something which the tax was supposed to do.
As to the argument that school bands would not participate, they appear the week before in Marysville and schools are finishing near the middle of June anyway. It would never hurt to ask them.
