I agree with those who are frustrated that our community’s lack of effort on a full-time, year-round pool. Why don’t we have a year around pool facility in Edmonds?
In July, 1995, the Edmonds City Council endorsed a 50-meter family/community aquatic center. The city spent $20,000 on consultants for a limited feasibility study in August, 2005. A random survey of Edmonds voters demonstrated support. The plan was to have the center co-located with the Edmonds-Woodway High School.
In the 2001 Parks and Recreation Master Plan, an indoor pool is listed as a priority.
The Edmonds Citizens’ Action Committee for Edmonds Aquatic Center has been meeting and gathering a significant number of Edmonds voters’ signatures, talking with various service organizations and key members of the community.
I believe an aquatic center would enhance the economic development potential of our community as well as serve our residents.
Since these meetings in February, 2006, our parks director has approached the city council to request funds to hire a consultant to evaluate Yost Pool. The Parks Department will request funds in the 2007 budget for a feasibility study concerning the question of a year-round pool.
A community of our size and caliber deserves to have a year around swimming facility for residents of all ages.
