Regarding Wednesday’s article, “Talmadge criticizes Boeing tax deal, and Locke fires back”: The truth is somewhere between Gov. Gary Locke and Phil Talmadge as they face off.
The fact is Boeing is extremely important to Washington. The facts are that Washington has bent over backwards for Boeing as well as its labor unions. Boeing has been given billions in tax breaks, millions more in training subsidies and a brand new pier.
The real crime, if there is one, is the continued offsets and offloading of existing work. Even when we get the 7E7, Boeing will in all probability dump (thousands) more jobs to subcontractors, foreign and domestic. Boeing will lean out production and forget about the people who made it all possible – the taxpayers and especially the employees. If what we do is strictly for profit and not also for human advancement, then there lies the cheapness and error of our value system. There is a win-win for Boeing and the community if Boeing is willing to be a team player.
