Channel-surfing recently, I landed for a while on “Q&A,” in which Brian Lamb was interviewing Paul Sparrow, director of the FDR Presidential Library and Museum. Director Sparrow showed us vast roomfuls of the former president’s personal collections covering broad and serious subjects, testaments to Roosevelt’s love of books, reading and the obvious importance to him of learning and knowing a lot about a lot of things. Ahhhh! I was impressed and inspired.
But, alas, the next morning, June 12, coffee mug in hand, I was brought back to the present by reading Tom Burke’s “What our best presidents didn’t do” (excellent column, as always). Truly, the contrast between No. 45 and many of his predecessors is staggering, akin to comparing the Three Stooges and the Three Tenors. Staggering and maddening.
