Great to see the Department of Agriculture figuring a way to cleverly continue the fight against hunger with SNAP benefits (“Food stamp funds going out early amid shutdown,” The Herald, Jan. 17). But the shutdown still threatens this program battling hunger. Time for us to join our voices with Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, Reps. Rick Larsen and Suzan DelBene, calling on Senate Leader Mitch McConnell to open the government and get back to the business of the nation. This “workaround” shows that we can make a difference for those in need.
Let’s take that energy forward and do the work necessary to end hunger and homelessness in the world’s richest country. Our calls, letters, and visits to those who represent us can make all the difference in making sure everyone can meet their basic needs.
