On Oct. 2 as I listened to my favorite baseball team, the Seattle Mariners, play to win a record setting game, I was at the same time aware that our United States soldiers were fighting to the death in Afghanistan. The peace and freedom I felt on this crisp afternoon stood in sharp contrast to the war on the other side of the globe.
We are in a war.
As the pacifists and WTO protesters are crying that we Americans should understand Osama bin Ladin, and as certain members of Congress quibble about giving the attorney general the power to destroy terrorists – we are at war. The will to win this war is of much more import than the wish to win the World Series, because the war against terrorists is to the death, literally.
This is war, and Congress needs to empower the FBI with enough trust and authority to win the war. We are playing hard ball, this is the Major Leagues. While I root for my Mariners, I pray for our soldiers. At stake is the world, not just the World Series.
