The San Juan Islands Advocacy Team is writing to publicly thank U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen for cosponsoring H.R. 256, which repeals he Authorization for the Use of Military Force of 2002. The AUMF is essentially a blank check that permits the president to wage war without Congressional approval. Repealing this AUMF, and two others still on the books, is a necessary step that Congress needs to take to reassert its constitutional role as a check on presidential power. By signing on to this bipartisan effort, Larsen is taking leadership in steering the United States toward a foreign policy that favors diplomacy over violence.
A similar bill has been introduced in the Senate by Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Todd Young, R-Ind. We urge Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray to follow Larsen’s lead and cosponsor this bipartisan legislation. The recent bombing in Syria is but one example of the need for Congress to be ever vigilant in ensuring that the new administration fulfill its promise to seek negotiated solutions to international conflicts. Our senators can help restore constitutional checks and balances by taking leadership on this issue.
Thank you, Rep. Larsen. Please step up to the plate, Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray.
