It brings sadness to my heart to report to all of you that your elected federal representatives in Congress – whether you be a loyal Republican voter, or a Democrat one – are pushing to slash billions of dollars (some far-fetched estimates say up to $1 trillion) from social programs designed to help keep the elderly, the disabled, and the poor afloat.
Programs like public housing (I’m sure some of you got some notices like I did this past summer regarding funding reductions), Medicare, Medicaid, education, food stamps and job assistance are in the crosshairs of the GOP-controlled Congress, all in an effort to come up with the money to rebuild the Gulf Coast.
If it’s any consolation, current funding for public television is also up on that list to get killed once again.
