In light of the devastating announcement of 20 to 30 percent layoffs at Boeing due to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks I suggest the following possible options to soften the blow. Step one – offer an early retirement. Step two – stopping of all overtime. Step three – cut the work week to 32 hours (a 20 percent payroll cut).
This would allow all employees to retain their jobs and spread the pain throughout the workforce to weather these terrible times. To reduce benefit expenditures, allow married couples who are both employed at Boeing to carry one spouse as a dependent on insurance rather than for both to carry a primary insurance. Extraordinary situations require extraordinary solutions.
