Cornfield cheers for the GOP

I’m a little confused: Is Jerry Cornfield supposed to be a news reporter, which is what you might think from the placement of his stories in the news pages, or does he write a Republican party opinion column, which is what you find when you read his “articles”?

He has been positively vibrating about Republicans’ chances this election in story after story. A case in point is Monday’s story about Dino Rossi and Patty Murray’s second debate. (“Rossi comes alive in 2nd debate”). Cornfield explicitly awards the debate to Rossi. Only in that context does he tell us that he thinks the first debate went to Murray.

That’s interesting — he didn’t say anything about that in his Oct. 14 story about the first debate. His lead was, “Democratic Sen. Patty Murray and Republican Dino Rossi engaged in a spirited debate…that revealed clear differences in their personalities and the direction each wants to take the country.” Somehow, when he thinks the Democrat won, Cornfield can remember what he learned in journalism school (he did attend, didn’t he?). But when he thinks the Republican won, he’s a cheerleader, saying “Rossi hit on all cylinders.” Fair and balanced, just like Fox News.

I don’t mind you letting Cornfield give his opinion, but give him an honest column and let somebody else report the news.
