In Friday’s endorsement in the Lieutenant Governor race, The Herald was right to remind voters pay attention to the occupant of this office or delete the position. (“Elect Bill Finkbeiner.”) Both Lt. Gov. Brad Owen and former Sen. Bill Finkbeiner are moderates within their own parties and can talk long about their bipartisan intentions.
Clearly both candidates read the electorate to understand projecting typical partisanship isn’t helpful to winning or serving in what is really state-wide elected parliamentary leadership.
To the extent an aspirant to this position can articulate appropriate reform of the legislative process that better serves voters than a particular party, that candidate looks like a winner.
If a Lieutenant Governor can take it a step further and question the many conveniences that both major parties enjoy, become an agent of just voters, only inside political operatives would want then to abolish the office altogether.
