The Central Puget Sound Growth Management Hearings Board recently told us all what astute Snohomish County Council observers have known for some time: This County Council has a much higher regard for the wallets of its developer pals than it does for the law.
The hearings board ruled that the Council in 2002 violated the state Growth Management Act in three separate decisions to convert rural or agricultural land for urban and commercial development.
Unbowed, the council is at it again. This month it voted (again) to rezone the Island Crossing land near Marysville owned by car salesman Dwayne Lane from agricultural to urban commercial. This one, too, is a clear law breaker.
The law is clear. We have an obligation to concentrate growth in urban areas, protecting our rural land and character in the process. It’s time for the County Council to stop flaunting the law and start living by it.
