It seems to me the most simple solution to have prevented this very unfortunate happening of handcuffing the 5-year-old girl because of her out-of-control behavior in the classroom, would have been to escort her immediately (certainly not handcuffed) to her mother’s home, until very necessary counseling help for both child and mother was arranged. (William Raspberry column, May 2: “Video of enraged 5-year-old shows society’s own toxicity”).
The TV tapes had also shown the classroom teachers’ concern and gentle help in their attempts to quiet her violent outbursts.
The whole episode is tragic and saddening.
