As he was being sworn in for his first term, President Dwight D. Eisenhower requested the Bible be opened to the following passage:
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2Chronicles 7:14.
It was clear to President Eisenhower our nation was in need of more than economic and political rebuilding. We were also in need of a spiritual rebuilding. Our nation needed to return to the Biblical principals upon which it was founded; principals of right and wrong based on the sovereignty of God.
As a nation we have drifted far from the course initially set for us by our founding fathers. Ours was a nation which took to heart the idea behind “Do unto others as you would have done unto you.” Now our national motto seems to be “I’ve got mine.” Recent developments with corporations such as Enron and WorldCom are perfect examples of this attitude.
Now we’ve been told that the phrase “one nation under God” is no longer constitutional. This nation, its laws, and its institutions were originally founded on Biblical principals. These were principals of right and wrong, love and acceptance, forgiveness and, yes, tolerance. If our nation is to survive, we need to return to these principals, for this is what made us a success.
We need to turn back to God and seek guidance, strength, and above all else, forgiveness. We all want to be able to stand tall in the sight of our children, and we will never stand taller than when we finally find ourselves on our knees.
