After saying that 10 months away was too close to the election to consider a Supreme Court nomination, the GOP now says that with less than a month to go, we need to rush through the nomination to replace Justice Ginsburg before election day. Wonder what the rush is?
Trump said the quiet part out loud we he stated “We’re counting on the federal court system to make it so we can actually have an evening where we know who wins.” But there’s never an election where it doesn’t take days or even weeks to count all the ballots and the pandemic will make counting slower. It’s Trump’s intent to declare victory on election eve, and he will no doubt try to stop the counting of all remaining ballots while he, temporarily, leads the race. Hence the need for a 6-3 decision by the court, lest Justices Roberts or Gorsuch find a conscience and refuse to allow our election to be stolen.
Republicans’ concern that “The voters must be allowed to weigh in” close to an election have vanished along with all their other purported principles, evaporating in the face of the cult of personality that is Trumpism. They don’t care about the will of the voters, and if they get their way they may never have to care again. They seek lifetime court appointments to give their party a veto over all legislation, overruling democracy by judicial fiat, because they know that time and shifting demographics are against them. They want nothing less than permanent minority rule.
