This letter is in response to the Nov. 10 article titled, “Adult Trial for 14 -year-olds.” I was completely devastated and demoralized after reading that the 14-year-olds were being charged as adults. The quote from Judge Charles French’s 29-page decision was most disturbing. The quote is as follows: “This case is not about saving children. The court has no power to do so. Ultimately the choices these children will continue to make will determine whether or not they succeed.”
I was shocked and appalled. Tears filled my eyes. My heart especially goes out to the 14-year-old daughter of Barbara Opel who allegedly motivated her own daughter to participate in this viciouscrime. Since birth, this little girl had no choices. What she was taught and the world she was surrounded by, was not ours. Where was the court the last 13 years of this poor child’s life? No one protected her.
I believe it is the court’s responsibility to save this child. It is society’s responsibility to do everything they can to rehabilitate her and teach her the correct morals. This little girl should be tried as a juvenile and given a second chance at life.
Adult prison is no slumber party! If Judge French convicts this child as an adult, he is stealing her soul and placing her in a cold, cruel, terrifying world behind bars.
I am asking the citizens of Snohomish County to have mercy upon this little girl and giver her a second chance at life. A chance she never had. If you feel she should be tried as a juvenile, please let Judge French know.
