Regarding the May 7 letter, “Utility must update its payment system”: The writer’s opposition to the way the Snohomish County PUD charges people who wish to pay their electric bills by credit card doesn’t realize the amount of money the credit card companies charge for their use.
Many people don’t realize the credit card companies charge the PUD 2.5 percent on every transaction when they accept payment by credit card. When you add up the amount of money they have to pay every month to the card companies, they would have to raise their rates to cover this loss. Therefore, the people that pay by check or cash would be subsidizing those that want to pay by credit card.
Therefore, the PUD is only doing what is right to keep the rates down. If you insist on paying with your credit card, then you should pay for the convenience of using it and not expect others to subsidize those who insist on paying by credit card.
