“It’s a miracle!” How many times do we hear this drivel connected with a life being spared, a lost whatever being found or, in this case, the nine very brave and courageous miners who were snatched from death’s jaws by the many very dedicated and equally courageous rescuers. Pronouncing their rescue as a miracle flies in the face of whatever passes for rational thinking. If God saved them, why did he put them in that position to begin with? To test us?
Would this be the same God who allowed the little girls to be abducted, raped and killed? Another test? So many times when seemingly cool thinking, excellent training, technical expertise or just plain luck overcomes impossible situations, so many people raise their hands saying, “Praise the Lord for saving them.”
Religion is OK. I don’t begrudge those who are so weak they need this crutch to get on with their lives. That’s OK, most people need something. But, to proclaim events like this as miracles is not only irrational but also wrong. Events that occur without any rational explanation may seem like miracles. But just because one doesn’t understand why things turn our as they do is no reason to tag them as miracles.
