Two items in The Herald reveal a lot. The Tuesday article, “More students are homeless, state and county report” tells us what some of us knew already; that is, homeless school children are increasing, which points to increases in the number of the homeless families they are in.
Given this, I am surprised to read the editorial “Local solutions can work.” Editors quote the governor saying that cuts will require that nonprofits, faith communities, and the community step up. A good effort by Housing Hope is then commended. What is missing is scope.
Housing Hope may be taking a step forward, yet the whole of needed aid is taking 10 steps backward. No amount of local effort can by its own doing stem the scope of the crisis. This is not to say it is not worth making local efforts. But if the editors at The Herald are not really clear what a massive loss we are about to sustain in our ability to care for the vulnerable via statewide resources, readers won’t be clear either.
