This is in response to the Thursday letter, “We have no need to offer apologies”: I am not ashamed of my country but I think the priorities of our political leaders is off base.
Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks which I think were very tragic, but they were performed by a group of individuals who are angry at the US for sticking it’s nose into other countries business.
Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan are no threat to the U.S. and Clinton knew about the impending 9/11 attacks but did nothing to stop them and he could have. Saddam Hussein was a brutal dictator but it should have been up to the Iraqi people to force him out not the U.S.
There is also the issue that while Saddam Hussein was brutal, he was once an ally of the US until he invaded Kuwait and risked US oil profits in the region and upon attacking Iraq destroyed what was actually a first medical and education system and has done nothing to help rebuild it.
The disasters of Hurricane Katrina and others would not have happened if the money being spent on the war on Iraq had been spent domestically to rebuild the infrastructure of our cities right here at home. Think about it.
